10styles inspired by DeKalb students

[Updated July 2019]

Ask any beauty professional: there are a million awesome reasons to work in the beauty industry. One thing that many beauty pros will tell you is that they love the ability to be creative. It’s one of the most exciting parts of the job.

Being creative isn’t always easy. Sometimes even the most creative people hit roadblocks. Luckily there are so many places to look for creative inspiration. A few great places to look for ideas are Pinterest, Instagram, your favorite fashion magazines, or just by people watching at the mall. Students at our Sycamore, Illinois campus have a unique source of creative inspiration: DeKalb, Illinois

DeKalb the College Town

Northern Illinois University is located in DeKalb, Illinois which is only a few minutes from our Sycamore campus. NIU students and Hair Pros students can often be found hanging out in the same places. Because our Sycamore campus is so close to NIU, we regularly get students visiting our student salon.* They always want the latest looks and styles. It’s important for the DeKalb kids to be on top of the latest trends.

7 DeKalb Inspired Hairstyles for 2019

Because we are so close to a college campus, we thought it would be a good idea to create a list of some of the latest and greatest college looks! Here are seven looks inspired by the students of DeKalb:

1. Silver Strands

Silvers and greys have been in style for a little bit, but this trend is still going strong. If you want to stand out from the crowd, this on-trend style is an excellent option. What is great is that you can pick a shade that works just right for you. Keep things subtle with an understated dark grey or make a bold statement with a bright silver!

2. Bangs are Big

Bangs are a big hit! Gone are the days when bangs were considered a teenage phase. Bangs are great if you want to make a simple change that creates a totally new look. Short, choppy bangs are super popular right now, but you’ll want to make sure you choose a style that complements your face shape.

3. Short Hair is a Homerun

For some industry-leading stylists, it’s all about the short cuts. A clean bob is a retro style that has made a major comeback. Or you can take it really short with a pixie cut like Halsey or Katy Perry. Whatever direction you decide to take things, these short hair looks are huge in 2019!

4. Short & Messy

For the dudes, having really short sides is still going strong in 2019. Short on the sides and messy on top is an awesome and easy style to rock for most guys. It’s especially flattering if you have a square face with a strong jawline. The great thing about this style is that it’s really low-maintenance and gives a nice relaxed touch to any outfit.

5. Short & Tidy

This is another excellent low-maintenance style for guys. If you’re one of our sharp NIU students in DeKalb, maybe you want to keep it a little more clean looking. Go short on the sides and tidy on top. This classy, timeless style is a great way to dress up a casual outfit or wow in a job interview.

6. Let It Grooooow

Not looking to keep it short and styled? No worries. Let it grow. You don’t see as many men with long hair now as you did a few years ago, but that just means you can really make it your own. Beware, the man bun is a cliche now. (Thanks, hipsters.) If you grow it out, do something else. Longer hair tends to be more work than short hair, but a subtle perm is a great way to keep things looking good without spending too much time on your hair every day.

7. Don’t Forget to Accessorize

No matter what style you choose to go for, hair accessories let you mix things up on a daily basis with ease. Clips and hair bands can add a splash of color. Experiment with hats and see what you can come up with. Once things cool off, a beanie opens up all sorts of hairstyling options. Have fun and get creative with accessories. You’d be surprised to discover your new favorite look!
